This magical town is in the state of Queretero, about 90 minutes away from SMA. Its main feature is a huge monolithic rock called “Peña de Bernal.” We’ll sketch the colorful Templo de San Sebastian Martir, as well as some of the masks in the Museo de Mascara. We’ll have a sketching lunch in one of the charming restaurants in Centro. Before we head for home, be sure to buy at least one loaf of the local specialty, cheese bread (like a very long Danish.)

About 90 minutes on the road takes us to Guanajuato City, home of the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote, an incredible collection of art devoted to depicting images of Don Quijote in every imaginable medium and style. We’ll sketch the facade of Teatro Juárez and also the people in centro, as they enjoy the fresh air in a town which restricts most auto traffic to underground tunnels.

Fee includes round-trip transportation from San Miguel in a comfortable van with our bilingual driver, Pancho. Also, a supplies kit and personalized instruction in “Sketching Fast & Loose.”

Small group, limited to 8 people.

Dolores Hidalgo and Atotonilco
Sketching, Sight-seeing, Shopping
Day Trip

Friday, August 25, 2023

The Magical town of Dolores Hidalgo has historical significance in Mexico’s Independence from Spain. More importantly for us, it is the center for manufacture of decorative hand-painted Talavera pottery.

A side trip to Atotonilco on our way back to SMA will give us the opportunity to see the breathtaking folk art collection at Galeria Atotonilco and to relax with drinks at the elegant Hotel Nirvana Restaurante & Spa.

“I can’t wait to go on another adventure with her!…

… I participated in Rhoda’s fabulous Day of the Dead sketching trip to Morelia and Patzcuaro, Michoacan. Our Morelia accommodations were lovely and well placed near the historical center. Our driver, Pancho, was incredibly kind, helpful and informative! Rhoda took us to many “sketch-worthy” places including a small village known for its Catrina figures. She allowed plenty of time for shopping, eating and “wandering”, as well as sketching… I highly recommend her trips.”
